How to Properly Maintain Construction Machinery for Long-Term Storage

Proper Storage of Construction Machinery:

  1. Storage Location:

    • Preferably store in a dry indoor environment. If stored outdoors, choose a flat surface, place wooden planks underneath, and cover the equipment with a tarp.
  2. Pre-storage Maintenance:

    • Perform a thorough maintenance check and repair any damaged parts. Clean the machinery thoroughly to maintain optimal technical conditions.
  3. Placement in Storage Yard:

    • Arrange machinery so each piece can be accessed without moving others.
  4. Control Settings:

    • Set the fuel control lever to idle and all operation levers to neutral.

Engine Maintenance:

  1. Drain the coolant from the engine.
  2. Replace engine oil with fresh oil, as it is neutral and prevents metal corrosion.
  3. Fill the fuel tank with diesel to avoid rusting and add a preservative if possible.
  4. Start the engine monthly to ensure lubrication, allowing short-distance movement. Remember to refill and drain the coolant before and after each startup.

Battery Maintenance:

  1. Remove the battery and store it in a dry, frost-free area. Keep the battery surface clean and free from conductive objects.
  2. Disconnect the battery by removing the negative terminal first, followed by the positive. Reconnect in reverse order during reinstallation.
  3. Recharge lead-acid batteries monthly.

Anti-corrosion Measures:

  1. Assess rust on the surface. Retouch small areas or repaint the entire machine if necessary.
  2. Apply grease to exposed metal parts of working components, such as the screed of pavers, loader buckets, or grader blades.

By following these practices, the machinery can be effectively preserved during long-term storage without compromising future performance.
